Unfortunately, I have to disagree with Erik and I also believe there is much more to this discussion then either of you have discussed. It is a big issue for solos in particular but much turns on other factors. I've written on it here.
In my opinion, it all turns on where you are in the growth curve of your overall professional life and legal career.

I still cannot decide between free and paid consultations. I do both and make my decision on the basis of the area of law and the source of the consultation.
